9/21/2023 0 Comments Is reactos secure![]() ![]() ![]() It's still a new product still in the R&D phases.Īnd this is why the need to throw money at it. In reality, it's still in early development and breaks and doesn't work on every computer. Everything that runs on Windows will run on ReactOS in theory. You can throw on your windows version of excel, use a lot of those old drivers and programs your company still needs from Windows XP days, do all your spreadsheets, play some solitaire, throw on the latest version of Windows-based Photoshop, pull in your dev's custom dll files needed for your custom equipment, everything. It crashes a lot, and a lot of the programs don't work just right. it means they'll be able to modify in ways that normally require significant funds given to Microsoft to allow.)įor all its potential to replace Windows without affecting what programs you can use or your business's productivity while still being open to updates, there's one big holdout from making it the perfect Windows replacement. May not mean a lot to you, but your Devs will probably like it. It's made by programmers to be Windows without having to deal with Microsoft, and with the Linux-like pricetag of "Free." (Not to mention open source. Except it's a remake of windows not owned by Microsoft. What ReactOS is, is for all intents and purposes, it's Windows as you've known it to always be. I don't recommend switching all of your computers in your business to ReactOS. In short, your choice of Windows version right now may not break the law when it comes to security, but in a few years, it probably will, and that opens you up to law suits, but you're stuck between a rock and a hard place.īefore I get further into this, let me stress. But you don't want your business to give up on Windows and move to Macs because you need your programs, and you can't force your entire staff to learn the enigmatic Linux without losing a lot of productivity. ![]() Not to mention those plans and site licenses can take a good chunk of your businesses' bottom line. However, other security requirements require maintaining security updates and addressing new security concerns Microsoft has made it clear that they don't plan to support Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 with updates indefinitely. In fact, most businesses I've seen in the past couple years have stayed solidly with Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 and not gone to 10. The OS moves things to their cloud for a lot of their services (providing them a lot of marketing power), it requires mandatory updates (this policy can cause problems with maintaining IT security), other security openings which can cause severe HIPAA violations (especially when it comes to sensitive client data passing through Microsoft's servers), and much more reasons create a very large list of reasons to not move to Microsoft's latest and greatest. Thing is, Microsoft has let their near-unshakable position as the king of desktops go to their heads with Windows 10, and it shows. Those are both pretty good reasons not to switch OSes (as much as I like Linux, there's just some things I have to have my Windows machine for.) And honestly, for either, I don't blame you. Maybe out of curiosity you looked, and were either (for the former) realizing you couldn't do what you wanted with it or (for the latter) realizing you didn't want to deal with the learning curve. If you have been suggested to switch to another operating system for your computer before, it was probably someone suggesting getting something Apple or someone fairly geeky (like myself in the past) suggesting Linux. The de-facto ruler of the desktop computer world is Microsoft and its ubiquitous Windows system. The thing is though, this one does matter to you if you make big decisions in a business. ![]() Unless you're extremely buried into the computer world (as I am), chances are you've never heard of the enigmatic OS known as "ReactOS." And normally, when people hear about such things, it falls into the category of, "Huh, that's a weird thing. ![]()
